Professor Aaron Sheehan-Dean with Louisiana State University's Department of History is also the author of The Calculus of Violence: How Americans Fought the Civil War. He joined Michael to discuss one of the most debated issues related to the Battle of and the Massacre of Centralia: were the actions of the guerillas that day equal to (what would today be called) "war crimes?" Sheehan-Dean talks specifically about Lieber's Code, which guided the Union's treatment of its opponents; most notably guerillas, and became the foundation for laws governing war which are still in place today. His interview helped shape Michael's understanding of the forces involved in Centralia and how that day's events were shaped.
This is bonus content to go with the episode, "The Battle and Massacre of Centralia."
